Earlier report:

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. --  Ramapo Police arrested a Spring Valley man in connection with the shooting of a taxi driver on Monday in Hillcrest.

Hakeem Gentles, 22, was charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault for shooting Rem Louis, 23, of Spring Valley around 3 p.m. Monday on West Eckerson Road in the Hillcrest section of Ramapo, said Det. Sgt. Brian Corbett late Thursday morning.

Following the shooting, Louis was transported to Westchester Medical Center where he remains, Corbett said.

An investigation into the shooting revealed that the incident was not a random shooting and police believe that one or two of the taxi's passengers were the intended victims, said Corbett.

Gentles is being held at the Rockland County Jail on $1 million bail.

Police are currently seeking a vehicle in connection with the shooting. The vehicle is a white 2004 Toyota Camry 4DSD with the New York registration AYA7260, he added.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ramapo Police Department at 845-357-2400.
