Shortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, first responders in Garrett County were called to the 100 block of South Second Street in Oakland, where there was a report of a truck that was engulfed in flames.
According to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, upon arrival at the scene, members of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department and Garrett County Sheriff’s Office found a late-model Nissan Titan with “heavy fire” in the truck’s bed and passenger compartment.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, and learned that a man and girl sustained “severe burns” and were transported to Garrett Regional Medical Center by a private vehicle, where they were both listed in critical condition.
First responders used a foam extinguishing agent to help extinguish the fire and help mitigate leaking fuel, according to a spokesperson from the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department.
It took crews an estimated two hours to knock down the flames and clear the scene.
The two victims - whose names are not being released, according to the fire marshal - were later transferred to a hospital in Pittsburgh for additional treatment and evaluation.
It is believed that the vehicle caught fire and continued to stay in motion for nearly a mile before the driver was able to pull over and he and the girl exited the truck, according to investigators.
Both the origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation, officials said, noting that the exact relationship between the man and girl is unknown.
