AIER compiled data from various metro areas across the country, taking into consideration information about student life, culture, economic health and opportunity.

Schools in the area include the University of Connecticut at Stamford, Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Fairfield University and the University of Bridgeport in addition to Norwalk Community College and Housatonic Community College. Western Connecticut State University in Danbury is just north of the noted area.

Sacred Heart University’s main Fairfield campus is in the heart of the designated “small city” region, and it maintains a downtown Stamford campus and satellites in Luxembourg and Ireland.

Boulder, Colorado, home of the University of Colorado, was first on the list.
