Students in Jeannie Kahn's ESL course are learning about American culture in addition to learning English. Danbury High School launched the program last year for Spanish speaking students who are new to the country, according to the report.

"Acculturation is a challenge," Kahn said in the News Times story. "This is more than a language class. There is a focus on reading and writing and speaking. The kids really want to learn. The ones who are here for a while help the new ones navigate around the schools."

Students in the course said that it helps to learn not only vocabulary, but how to be independent in a new country, according to the story.
