Danbury Native Earns Scholarship To Western Connecticut State

DANBURY, Conn. – Danny Peguero, a 20-year-old Danbury native, is attending Western Connecticut State University and is on track to be the first person in his family to earn a four-year college degree. The Naugatuck Valley Community College graduate recently received the President-to-President scholarship.

WCSU and NVCC are co-sponsors of the scholarship, which was started in 2003. Melissa Puhi, a Norwalk Community College graduate, was another recipient of the award. This is the third year that NCC has presented the scholarship.

Peguero is studying finance at WCSU and plans to become an entrepreneur. He said he was an average student in high school but he has come to enjoy working hard on his courses.

“The challenges we go through pursuing our education will only make us greater when we join the workforce,” he said.

Peguero said he made working for the President-to-President scholarship a priority when he found out about it. Otherwise, he would have had to begin working with only an associate’s degree and may not have been able to go back to college for a four-year degree.

“The scholarship is an amazing opportunity for anyone who deserves it,” Peguero said. “This scholarship definitely opens up many doors for me because now I can focus on my classes instead of working a full-time job, trying to pay my way through school.”

Peguero’s extracurricular activities at NVCC included serving as student government vice president and later, president. He hopes to serve in student government at Western as well.
