Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational problem-solving competition for students from kindergarten through college. The long-term problems fall into five general categories: Vehicle, Technical, Classics, Structure and Performance and are broken down into divisions by age.
Last weekend's competition was held at Bristol Eastern High School. The Rogers Park team took second place in its problems division and was also honored with the Jill Riggles Award for its first-place score for the spontaneous problem. The team members are Aliya Hafiz, Sofiya Hafiz, Reed Lyall, Jack Lyall, Colin McLoone, Jimmy Onorato and Laura Snow. Dan Lyall and Carolyn Onorato coach them.
This is the team's third state victory, and it earns them the opportunity to compete at the World Finals, which will be held at Iowa State University, in Ames, May 25-28. Nearly 160 teams from across the state competed. The top two teams from each problems division are invited to represent Connecticut and compete at the World Finals.
Over 800 teams from around the world will compete in the 37th Odyssey of the Mind World Finals this year.
