Students from Mrs. Fortunato’s kindergarten class, Mrs. Gallagher’s second grade class and Mrs. Koveleski’s fifth grade class spent Monday morning sorting through a pile of donated food and organizing the items into a feast in a box.
“Why did we do all of this today?” Gwen Gallagher, the food drive's organizer, asked the more than three dozen students.
Some answered, “to give everyone food” and “to help people have a good Thanksgiving,” while others said they just wanted to help.
Gallagher called the students up to the table full of food to pluck out each traditional Thanksgiving item until the boxes were full. The boxes full of stuffing, potatoes, pie filling, gravy and cranberry sauce will be delivered to 10 families along with turkeys donated by Stew Leonard’s, she said.
Aidan, a 7-year-old student, said they were all working together to prepare the boxes of food and said he hopes the recipients will have a great Thanksgiving.
“I think the people will like the turkeys and pie,” said Kerri, a 7-year-old helping with the sorting. “They will probably really like getting the food.”
As the students finished packing the last boxes, Principal David Krafick offered words of encouragement.
“You guys are doing something really, really great,” Krafick said. “Doesn’t it feel great to give?”
This isn’t the only lesson in charity for Park Avenue students this week, Gallagher said. Students can dress up in the costume of their choice at school Tuesday if they donate $1 to Hurricane Sandy victims.
