There are so many ways to be a great citizen, and so many different aspects of a person that fall under that heading, that I think it’s important to start by saying that our sixth-grade honoree is really well rounded.
Carabello exemplifies so many admirable qualities, so frequently, and through so many parts of the day that you don’t need to dig very deep before you see that these positive traits are an authentic part of who he is and what he does.
It’s not good luck that makes this true, and it’s not just particularly kind DNA (although I’m sure he has that), it is his willpower to exercise the right decisions and the kind actions, his consistency in doing this no matter who is around, and his pursuit of this community’s standards, that together begin to set him in special company.
Example: Volunteerism as a part of the middle school self-help philosophy is a learned disposition. You learn that it exists, you learn that it’s important in keeping our surroundings fit, you learn that it contributes to a citizenship rating, you learn that you cannot do it and nothing bad happens to you… and then you put these things together and make a decision. His decision has been to basically invent the ‘Daily Double,' in which you volunteer for KP or waiter at the end of lunch and then setter up after announcements, and then go to your job in the afternoon.
The thing that people notice is that he has only one way he interacts with people and this is with kindness, humor and courtesy.
To be known as a trend-setter for this type of thing, in a community of overwhelmingly kind and nice people, is pretty cool. We’ll enjoy having you on our fields, and in our hallways, classrooms and advisories for years to come.
