Teaching Programs At Danbury's WestConn Recognized

DANBURY, Conn. -- After receiving full accreditation for its education unit last fall from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, Western Connecticut State University is now nationally recognized for its entire inventory of initial and advanced programs leading to educator certification.

All 12 of Western Connecticut's teaching certification programs are now nationally recognized.

All 12 certification programs – from elementary education to Spanish – are nationally recognized by specialty professional associations, such as the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics. The programs also include the Master of Arts in Teaching, all secondary education programs and intermediate administrator programs (both building and district levels).

In addition to the recognition, the music and school counseling programs continue to be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs, respectively.

“It is very rare to get 100 percent of your programs recognized without conditions. And we have attained that at Western,” Catherine O’Callaghan, WCSU professor of education, said in a statement. “This hallmark of quality is often a key factor in students’ choosing a program.”

O’Callaghan said that this distinction and the previous full accreditation have already resulted in an influx of new and transfer students.
