Danbury Flyers Pile Up Medals At 2 Indoor Track Meets

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Danbury Flyers, the area's premier year-round running club, competed in two meets over the holidays.

On Dec. 27, the Flyers traveled to New Haven to compete in the Connecticut Hawks Youth Developmental Meet, held in the Floyd Little Athletic Center of Hillhouse High School. The Flyers had a great day, winning eight events. 

The Flyers clinched first place in three of the 55m dash events: Kimberleigh Williams (girls 9-10), Jesse Mboya (boys 9-10), and Kieran Edwards (boys 8 & under) won with times of 8.68, 8.80, and 8.50, respectively. Edwards also took first place in the boys 8 & under division in the 200m dash. Rounding out the Flyers' first place finishes in running events were Sofia Whelchel (girls 11-12) in the 400m dash with a time of 1:11.3, and Kristen Krigsman (girls 13-14) in the 800m dash, finishing the race in 2:50.2. 

The Flyers also placed first in two field events. Meagan Bourgeault (girls 13-14) won the high jump after clearing 3' 10", and Kieran Edwards (boys 8 & under) took first place in the long jump with a jump of 11'2".

The Flyers rang in the new year by returning to Hillhouse on Jan. 3, 2016, to compete in the Southern Connecticut Youth Developmental Meet. Again, the Flyers had a strong showing, taking home eight first-place finishes.

Kimberleigh Williams (girls 9-10) and Kieran Edwards (boys 8 & under) again won their divisions in the 55m dash, with finishing times of 8.74 and 8.47, respectively. Edwards also finished first in the boys 8 & under 200m dash with a time of 30.83. Alanna Smith (girls 13-14) won the 400m dash, finishing the race in 1:04.2. 

In addition to top sprinting performances, the Flyers also fared well in distance events. Sophia Guevara (girls 11-12) completed the 1500m in 6:08.3 and Madelaine Sweeney (girls 11-12) finished the 3000m in 13:03.8 to win the events for the Flyers. Kieran Edwards (boys 8 & under) and Edmund Hurdle (boys 13-14) won the long jump in their age groups.
