Danbury Officials, Whalers At Odds On Security Costs

DANBURY, Conn. -- Danbury City Council members are seeking more than $100,000 owed by the Danbury Whalers ice hockey team in unpaid police and fire protection services, but the team -- and its fans -- are protesting the debt, according to the News Times.

The Whalers, a team founded in 2011 in the Federal Hockey League, reportedly stopped paying the fee for police and fire protection during the 2012-13 season.

Whalers team President Alan Friedman says the city does not have the authority to require them, while fans are worried about officials driving a away the popular Danbury team, according to the article.

City officials counter that Danbury Ice Arena does not have the proper sprinkler system for the size of crowds that attend games, and police are needed in the event of unruly fans, according to the article.

A city council meeting will be held at City Hall on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. to discuss the issue of the Whalers' debt.
