Emilia Murdock, 12, won the gold medal in the Intermediate Ladies final round at the New England Regional qualifying competition in Boxborough, Mass., last month.
That win qualified her to head to Eastern Sectionals, which begin this week in Simsbury. She will be competing against the top four skaters from the South Atlantic and North Atlantic regions as well as the second, third and fourth place finishers from New England.
The top four skaters from the Eastern Sectionals proceed to the 2016 U.S. figure skating national championship in St Paul, Minn., in January.
For Emilia, the Eastern Sectionals competition begins Wednesday morning with the short program and finishes up Thursday with the long program.
Emilia earned the highest score at New Englands and is heading into Sectionals with the third highest score on the East Coast. She has the ninth highest score in the country among intermediate ladies.
She trains at Twin Rinks, Eisenhower Park, in East Meadow, Long Island, N.Y., with her coach Mary Lynn Gelderman every morning before school.
She is a seventh-grader at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan.
Emilia has moved up a level of figure skating. She is competing this season as in Intermediate Ladies. Last season, she skated to a silver-medal-winning performance in the Juvenile Girls level at the U.S. Figure Skating national championships in January in North Carolina.
U.S. Figure Skating Association offers multiple categories up through senior, the skaters seen competing at the Olympics.
Emilia follows in a great tradition of figure skating in Connecticut. Greenwich is the childhood hometown of 1976 Olympic gold medalist Dorothy Hamill.
