Danbury Runner Takes 2nd In Age Group At NYC Half Marathon

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Runners from Fairfield County got off to a flying start for the spring running season in Sunday’s New York City Half Marathon.

Sharon Vos of Old Greenwich finished secon in her age group, while several others had top five finishes in their age groups. The race had 19,455 total finishers.

Vos was the 60-64-year-old women’s age group in 1:31:29. She was 153rd among 10,150 women finishers. Vos was initially listed as the winner in her age group. After a scoring change, Kathryn Martin won the age group in 1:30:36.

Westport’s Cassidy Tanner, 19, finished fourth in the 19-and-under age group in 1:44:32. Tanner is a student at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

In the 45-49 age group, Darien’s Liz Herbert finished fifth in 1:28:24. Erica Merrill of Rowayton ran 1:34:31 and finished fourth in the 45-49 age group, with Heather Knight-Pech of Rowayton fifth in 1:35:59.

Danbury’s Leigh Sorrells finished second in the men’s 45-49 age group in 1:15:34. Bruce Cook of Greenwich was third in the 60-64 age group in 1:31:58.

Despite an erratic training schedule during the brutal winter, runners found time to get fit for Sunday’s race, which took place under seasonable conditions. The race started in Central Park and finished in Manhattan.
