Redd, a second-year player who starred at King in Stamford, is scheduled to have the surgery performed by famous orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. The running back tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee in a game last Thursday against Cleveland.

In a story on the Washington Redskins website, Redd said he believes he can return from the injury to have a productive career. “It was just the initial shock,” Redd said. “‘Oh my gosh,  Am I done? Am I done?’ But once that settles and everything, then you understand the whole thing.”

The knee injury is the first season-ending blow for Redd, who started his college career at Penn State and transferred to USC. He made the Redskins last year as a free agent and was competing for a spot on this year’s team.

“It’s frustrating, but God gives his hardest battles to the strongest soldiers,” Redd said after the injury. “Just another obstacle and I’ll get through it.”

Redd plans to remain in Virginia for rehabilitation. “Hopefully I don’t have any complications with that and then from there we’ll start setting things up,” Redd said.

The Redskins waived Redd on Sunday. He can re-sign with the team if he is unclaimed.

Redd suffered the injury while being tackled during a run in the third quarter of last week's game. “It's very unfortunate for Silas,” Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said on the Redskins' website. “He was having a good camp and making good progress.”

Andrews has performed surgery on a number of notable athletes. The Redskins' team physician also repaired the knee of quarterback Robert Griffin III after an injury similar to Redd's in 2012.
