This award is voted on annually by the Western New England Preparatory School Athletic Counsel Lacrosse Coaches Association on behalf of US Lacrosse. This is the highest possible honor given to high school lacrosse players and the first in Wooster School’s 90-year history. Byrnes was a finalist for this award in 2014 and 2015.
“The Western New England Division III Championship game was the best lacrosse game I’ve ever played in. To come from behind with my teammates and win a championship for our coaches and each other and Wooster was something I’ll never forget,” said Byrnes. “Everybody contributed. The All-American Award is just icing on the cake. Three years ago, we could barely field a team. Now, we work hard, we have fun, we stick together and we’re winning.
"Wooster is a great school for me, and Coach Rexford is building an awesome program here in all the right ways. I can’t thank my teachers, my coaches, my parents and my brothers and sister enough for their support.”
Because he plays close defense, long-stick midfield and even short-stick midfield on occasion for the Generals, Byrnes rarely leaves the field during games. A two-year team captain, he scooped up over 80 ground balls this season while matching up against the best offensive players in Division II and III. He finished the regular season with 22 goals, 14 assists and over 50 caused turnovers.
“Kern has been the best player on the field every game since I arrived here last year,” said Coach Bill Rexford of Ridgefield. “We end as champions not just because of Kern’s physical skills, but also due to his toughness, determination and ability to lead and support his teammates. We could not be more proud of Kern.”
