The three-vehicle crash occurred just after 9 a.m. Thursday, and the highway was still closed after 10:15 a.m., Connecticut Department of Transportation said.
The closure is on I-84 westbound between Exits 31 and 30 because of the crash. DOT said the road could be closed for up to two hours or more, and large traffic jams are reported in the area, which is east of Waterbury.
DOT was advising motorists to use an alternate route and avoid the area completely even in the early afternoon.
I-84 eastbound is congested for over 2 miles between Exits 28 and 31 because of the police activity. The left lane is closed.
Connecticut State Police told WTNH-TV News 8 that the Life Star helicopter and other emergency services responded to the crash scene. Life-threatening injuries were reported, with at least two people taken to the hospital, WTNH said. Click here to read the story at the WTNH website.
