DANBURY, Conn. – Dr. Robert Bedoukian, president of Bedoukian Research, a family-owned company in Danbury, took part in a White House roundtable Tuesday on increasing U.S. exports, according to U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-5th District.

Bedoukian Research, with 64 Connecticut employees, is located on Finance Drive in Danbury.

"I was honored to be part of this important event today,” said Bedoukian. “Creating value with a continual focus on research and innovation is critically important to my company, the fragrance industry, and to all companies who hope to create new jobs and opportunities and expand to international markets."

Esty invited Bedoukian to attend the White House event. The discussion, hosted by Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and U.S. Trade Rep. Mike Froman, focused on best practices and available federal tools for American businesses looking to expand their exports, Esty said.

She toured Bedoukian Research and met with employees on Jan. 22.

“Here in Connecticut, we have significant opportunities to grow our manufacturing firms and small businesses through increased sales to other countries,” said Esty. “When I toured Bedoukian Research this past January, I was impressed not only by their outreach and innovation, but also by their keen awareness of ways we as a country can strengthen our trade policies.

"For example, Dr. Bedoukian emphasized to me the importance of intellectual property rights. I was proud to bring his suggestions, as well as reinforce the need for smart trade policies that put American workers and businesses first, to the table today. ... I am looking forward to bringing these best practices back to businesses in our communities to help them expand, create new good-paying jobs, and compete in the global market.”

Last year, Connecticut set a record with $16.4 billion worth of exports. In 2011, 27.4 percent of all manufacturing workers in Connecticut depended on exports for their jobs.

Bedoukian Research, a supplier of specialty aroma and flavor ingredients, was founded in 1972. The family-owned company offers more than 450 Aroma Chemicals and 50 Insect Pheromones, and provides custom manufacturing services to the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and specialty chemical industries. Currently, 55 percent of its sales are exports.

It has recently partnered with environmentally friendly startups to secure new, sustainable material sources.

Bedoukian serves on the board of directors of the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials and the International Fragrance Association of North America.
