Horne was chosen on Sept. 8 at a meeting of the Heart of Women Selection Committee.

“The committee is always so moved by the nominations we receive, sometimes to tears,” said Elizabeth Durkin, director of the Women’s Business Council. “Julia Horne embodies the qualities the Award was created to celebrate and we are thrilled to be able to honor her after such an exemplary career.”

Horne worked in the Danbury School District for more than 40 years.

“I am deeply honored to be included with such a distinguished group of nominees as well as women who have received this award in previous years,” said Horne. “I am humbled, touched and surprised and thank the Women’s Business Council and those who nominated me. It really means so much.”

This year’s other nominees included Allison Stockel, Anita Ragona, Elaine Mintz, Glenda Armstrong, Dr. Jane Gates, Jennifer Avari, Jody Gemmell, the Rev. Phyllis J. Leopold and Theresa Santoro.

Now in its fifth year, the Heart of Women Award was created in 2011 to recognize women who have made a difference, inspired others and positively affected the lives of others in the community. Nominees must be female and reside, work, or whose impact has been felt in the greater Danbury region.

People’s United Bank recently signed on as title sponsor of the signature community event, which will be held at the Ethan Allen Inn on Oct. 15 at 5 p.m.
