The prescription discount card program was announced by Mayor Mark Boughton in January 2013. It allows residents to obtain savings on prescriptions that are not covered under their current insurance plans. The Prescription Drug Discount Cards were sent in the mail to every Danbury resident, and the cards are still available at City Hall and at many pharmacies.
“It is great to see that residents are taking advantage of this program and I hope that they will continue to use the discount whenever possible," Boughton said. "It can be extremely difficult to cover the cost of prescriptions when insurance is not available, or if your health insurance doesn’t cover all your prescriptions, and this helps alleviate some of that struggle.”
The cards offer the following features and benefits:
- Anyone can participate, regardless of age or income;
- All prescription medications are covered, including pet prescriptions that can be filled at a pharmacy;
- There is no cost to the municipality or to participating residents;
- Cost savings average 45 percent;
- There are over 63,000 participating pharmacies nationwide, including, CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Stop & Shop, Big Y and many independent pharmacies; and
- Discounts are also offered on other medical services, including vision, hearing and Lasik services.
The prescription card is made available through a joint effort with the Connecticut Conference of Mayors. So far, 115 towns and cities have signed up for the program. The program is free to any CCM-member municipality, and there are no costs to either the participating municipalities or their residents.
