DANBURY, Conn. -- Drivers will want to remember Second Avenue in Danbury will be closed weekdays beginning Jan 20 for Interstate 84 improvements.

The road will be closed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Rowan Street to North Street (Route 37). A detour with posted signs will be in place. Traffic will be detoured onto North Street, Balmforth Avenue, Maple Avenue, Patch Street and then onto Rowan Street, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

The project consists of the widening of the I-84 eastbound and westbound exit 5 off-ramps and the exit 6 on and off ramps. Route 37 (North Street and Padanaram Road) will be widened in the area of exit 6 and traffic signals will be upgraded and/or added at intersections from Balmforth Avenue to the North Street Shopping Center.

In addition, a new storm drainage system will be installed on Second Avenue. The project is projected to cost about $15 million and is scheduled to be completed by August 2017.

Second Avenue will be opened to traffic at the end of each workday. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity.
