The Cessna C-172 aircraft crashed at about t 9:17 a.m., a.m. at the end of Runway 17-35 at Candlelight Farms Airport in New Milford, the Federal Aviation Authority said in a statement.
The aircraft had departed from the Danbury Municipal Airport, about 20 miles away, earlier with three people onboard, the FAA said.
At 9:51 a.m., New Milford police received a 911 call from a resident reporting that an injured man who had been a plane crash was seeking help at the home. The resident lives at Border Lane and Green Pond Road, near the airport, police said.
The man told responding officers that there were two additional victims in the airplane, police said. Officers located the plane nearby and discovered two victims were trapped inside, police said.
The female pilot had life-threatening injuries, was extricated by first responders and was flown by LifeStar helicopter to Hartford Hospital, police said.
The co-pilot was trapped and presumed deceased by EMTs on the scene, police said. NBC Connecticut reported that he was a flight instructor.

The man who had sought help was transported by ambulance with EMTs to Danbury Hospital, police said.
Officials were in the process of notifying the families of the victims, police said. None of the victims were identified by name.
The FAA will investigate, and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the accident, the statement said.
An investigator from the NTSB is enroute to Connecticut to investigate the crash, a spokesman said. The crash scene has been secured for investigators, police said.
Candlelight Farms Airport has one runway, which is turf and is 2,900 feet long.
New Milford police and emergency crews responded to the crash, New Milford Mayor David Gronbach said in a statement. LifeStar emergency medical helicopters have responded, he said, as well as first responders from surrounding areas, including Sherman Fire, Sherman Ambulance, Bridgewater Ambulance and Medic 4 paramedics.
The Cessna C-172 is a small single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft. The plane's owner has been notified of the crash, police said.
