Police investigators in Milford were alerted by a loss prevention agent at Sears on Boston Post Road of a shoplifter who had been taken into custody shortly after noon on Tuesday.

The investigation into the alleged shoplifting incident found that New Haven resident Mizraim Diaz-Rivera, 42, was allegedly attempting to steal more than $120 in merchandise, possibly with a counterfeit $20 bill.

While he was being detained, police said that Diaz-Rivera realized that the counterfeit bill would also be investigated and he went on to eat the counterfeit money. He was also found to be in possession of prescription medication that was not prescribed to him.

Diaz-Rivera was arrested and charged with larceny, tampering with evidence, forgery, interfering with a police officer, breach of peace and possession of narcotics. Following his arrest, Diaz-Rivera is currently being held in lieu of $10,000 bond. He is due to appear in court at a later date to answer the charges.
