Danbury police charged Richard Doyle, 55, of Mahopac, NY with two counts of tampering with a witness. He was arrested at his store, American Breeders on Federal Road in Danbury, at around 9:30 a.m. Friday and held on a $10,000 bond.
Police said the warrant stems from an investigation by Danbury police detectives who were assigned to assist state Animal Control with an investigation they were conducting.
Doyle was arrested in July and charged with three counts of animal cruelty. According to an investigation conducted by state animal control officers with the Department of Agriculture, Doyle performed a surgical procedure on the eye of a Neapolitan Mastiff, which he was not authorized to do. He also confined a critically ill kitten and did not provide it veterinary care, according to police. Police said he also did not provide care for a sick Shih-Tzu puppy. Both the kitten and the puppy were euthanized.
Two days after Doyle's arrest in July, the manager of his store was also arrested. Kathy Seton, 29, of Cold Springs, NY was charged with animal cruelty.
Following his arrest, Doyle closed one of his American Breeders locations in Wappingers Falls. He still owns stores in Danbury and Mohegan Lake.
Doyle and Seton have both pleaded not guilty in the animal cruelty cases, and are expected to appear again in court in January.
