Jeanette Navin, 55, and her husband, Jeffrey Navin, 56, haven't been seen or heard from since Aug. 4. They were reported missing by relatives Friday.
Police say an older Dodge pickup truck belonging to the couple was found Sunday in Westport in a commuter parking lot off the Merritt Parkway.
WFSB-TV reported that state court records show that Jeffrey Navin was $2.2 million in debt as of December in connection with a mortgage on a Guilford home that has not been paid in years.
Jeffrey Navin is president of J&J Refuse in Westport, which started operations in 1985 with one man and a truck, according to the company's website.
A message on the company’s phone said: “Due to a family emergency, some collections have been delayed. ... We are working to get back on schedule.”
The Navins, who recently moved from Weston to Easton, grew up in Westport and attended local schools, according to the J&J website, which says it is the No. 1 refuse and recycling collection company in Westport.
Jeanette Navin is a school library aide at Weston Intermediate School.
Easton Police Chief Timothy Shaw said there was nothing amiss in the couple's Easton apartment. The truck had a smashed window, but police are not sure whether that is connected to the couple's disappearance.
"At this point we are not ruling anything out, but it didn't seem [the broken window] would be associated because it was so long. ... They went missing Tuesday and that was located Sunday," he said Wednesday about the truck. "Most people feel that if a window had been broken for that length of time, State Police would have been notified."
He said police are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
"We are keeping it as a missing persons (case), although the longer it goes, it becomes more suspicious, obviously," Shaw said.
