Members of the Danbury Police Department’s Special Investigations Division, with the assistance of the Special Victims Unit and K-9 Division, executed search-and-seizure warrants at the salon at 8 Ives St. for the business as well as the owner, Mohamed Coats, 38.
Both warrants were issued as a result of an investigation in response to complaints from area residents that Coats was selling illegal drugs in and around Konnecticut Hair Design in downtown Danbury, police said.
During the investigation, surveillance revealed frequent visits from known drug users who would enter and leave the business within minutes, which is consistent with illegal drug activity, police said.
Additionally, known drug users were regularly seen sitting on the stoop outside the business entrance and at other nearby businesses, police said.
In a search, officers found narcotics packaged for sale in Coats' possession as well as in his business and a small amount marijuana was found in his car, police said. Coats was arrested, his business was closed and he was transported to the Danbury Police Department.
Coats, of 47 Rowan St., Danbury, was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of school, possession of narcotics with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school and possession of a controlled substance.
He was held on $5,000 bond pending arraignment or release.
