UPDATED: Fairfield University released a statement regarding this incident Tuesday. It is incorporated into the story.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A 20-year-old Fairfield University student said she was raped in a townhouse on campus early Sunday, but she refused to identify the suspect to police or hospital workers or to press charges, police said.

The victim said she was at a party in a townhouse when she went upstairs to fix her hair around 12:30 a.m., police said.

She said a male she had just met knocked on the door and she invited him in, police said. She said they then had non-consensual intercourse and she went to St. Vincent’s Medical Center to be examined with two friends, police said.

The victim did not report the incident to town police or campus security, police said.

Hospital staffers are required by law to notify police of rape claims and officers arrived at the hospital, where the victim refused to provide the suspect’s name and was reluctant to give any other details, police said.

A statement from the university read, in part, "Fairfield University is following standard protocol pertaining to a reported sexual assault and misconduct incident on campus over the weekend. For protection and privacy for the parties involved, we will not release any additional details."

The statement goes on to detail the ways its Public Safety officers patrol campus and the smart phone app it uses to enable quick and effective responses to incidents.
