DANBURY, Conn. State police seized 37.6 pounds of marijuana during a motor vehicle stop on Interstate 84 in Danbury on Monday and lodged drug charges against the driver, police said.
Trooper First Class Jason Cassavechia spotted a speeding Ford Focus traveling east on I-84 near Exit 2 and tried to pull the driver over, State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance said Tuesday.
The driver identified as William J. Servos, 28, of 158 Newington Road, West Hartford was traveling at speeds of up to 85 mph before he finally pulled over on southbound Route 7 near the Danbury Fair Mall.
As he approached the car, Cassavechia smelled a strong odor of marijuana, police said. During a search of the car, he saw a small bag of pot on the passenger floor, police said. Cassavechia kept searching the car and found two large suitcases containing a total of 37.6 pounds of pot, police said.
Servos was placed into custody and charged with the following misdemeanors: possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana greater than 1 kilogram, possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless driving. He was released after posting $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Danbury Superior Court on Oct. 1.
