The incident began at 3:06 a.m. July 17 when Connecticut State Troopers from Troop A attempted to stop a car for speeding on I-84 westbound near Exit 10 in Newtown, police said.
The driver refused to stop, police said. At Exit 6 in Danbury, State Troopers deployed stop sticks, however, they failed to stop the vehicle, police said.
The man drove off the roadway at a high rate of speed toward a State Trooper who was outside his cruiser, assisting a motorist with an unrelated traffic incident in the area of Exit 6, state police said.
The Trooper discharged a round from his duty weapon, police said. The round struck the vehicle, which continued off Exit 6 through several towns before crashing in the area of Route 7 and Route 37 in New Milford, police said.
At the crash scene, the suspect got out of his vehicle and engaged Troopers and Danbury Police Officers in a physical altercation, police said.
During the struggle, officers deployed a Taser on the suspect and he was eventually handcuffed, police said.
Several of the Troopers involved were treated and released from Danbury Hospital, police said.
The man was taken into custody and transported to Danbury Hospital for evaluation.
The suspect, who was not injured, was identified as Kenneth Lyden, 32 of 2 Cliff St., Wolcott.
He was charged with first-degree criminal attempt at assault; two counts of assault on a police officer; reckless endangerment; interfering; engaging in pursuit; reckless driving and misuse of plates.
The incident remains under investigation, state police said.
