The incident began just past midnight on Tuesday, when two Hartford Police officers on a special detail in response to recent reports of gunfire in the area, were patrolling in the area of Captial Avenue and South Whitney, said the Connecticut State Police.

While on patrol, the officers noticed a gray, four-door sedan driving erratically and attempted to stop the vehicle for a moving violation.

The vehicle attempted to elude officers before coming to a stop in the area of 89 South Whitney. An unidentified person jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot.  Another occupant took off in the vehicle and police are currently searching for it. It's unknown how many people were in the vehicle, state police said.

One of the Hartford officers ran after the suspect on foot who turned to police and fired a gun. Hartford Police returned fire and the suspect was struck multiple times in the leg by police, state police said.

The suspect was taken into custody by police and the handgun was immediately recovered.

Officers and the suspect were transported to St Francis Hospital. The suspect, whose name is not being released at this time is currently in critical condition. The Hartford Police officers names are not being released at this time.

At the request of the Hartford State’s Attorney’s Office, the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime is investigating the use of force incident.
