DANBURY, Conn. -- Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton's gubernatorial campaign was dealt a significant blow Thursday when his onetime running mate Heather Somers announced she would seek the position of lieutenant governor on her own, according to the Hartford Courant.

The political marriage between Boughton and Somers was one of financial convenience, the Courant said. Boughton lacks the personal finances to compete against fellow Republican candidate Tom Foley of Greenwich and was hoping Somers would help bridge the gap, the Courant reported.

An adviser for Somers said her camp broke from Boughton because they felt it was the best strategy for success, the Courant said.

Boughton is looking to challenge Foley, the Republican Party-endorsed candidate, and John McKinney of Fairfield in an August primary.
