Shortstop Breaks Finger as Darien Falls to New Canaan

DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien High School baseball team lost more than the game in its 4-2 defeat by New Canaan on Wednesday. It also lost shortstop Thomas Carruthers, who broke his finger in the bottom of the first inning.

After leading off the game with a single, Carruthers attempted to steal second. He was thrown out while diving and broke a finger on his left hand.

“It’s tough, losing our senior captain shortstop like that,” said Darien head coach Mike Scott. The team will have to recover from the loss of one of its star players, he said. “People get hurt, and we have to bounce back and keep working hard.”

Darien struck first in the bottom of the fourth when Spencer Dean singled and moved to second on a groundout by Tucker White. He then scored on a single by Bryan Previte.

In the bottom of the fifth, Alex Yergy singled to right center and stole second. The throw went wide, allowing Yergy to continue on to third. He scored on a single by Thomas MacLean.

New Canaan struck back in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Andrew Casali singled up the middle, then moved to second on a single by William Burger. Gordon Jones hit a ground ball to second, but the throw to first was bobbled, allowing Casali to score and Burger to move to third. Daniel Rajkowski hit a hard drive to the second baseman, who stopped the ball but was unable to get it up, enabling Burger to score the tying run.

The Rams put the game away in the top of the seventh when Alex Curto singled and stole second. He then scored on a single by Casey Ouellette, who moved to third on a single by Doug Reilly and then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Casali.

“It was a tough ballgame. It was well played, but they had some more timely hits out there,” Scott said.
