Duo From Smithtown, Port Jefferson Station Nabbed For Allegedly Impersonating Police Officers

Two men were arrested after impersonating police officers on Long Island and attempting to score drugs while conducting phony traffic stops, investigators announced.

The Suffolk County Police Department received a complaint from a male motorist shortly before 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, after he was pulled over by two men driving a black 2012 Chevy Tahoe with flashing blue and white lights in Smithtown.

Police said that Franco Calla, age 20, of Port Jefferson Station, and Robert Toomey, age 23, of Smithtown, approached the stopped vehicle on Route 111 near East Main Street, demanding the man’s driver’s license and ordering him to surrender any drugs.

Upon further questioning from the curious motorist, the two men admitted they were not actually law enforcement and they proceeded to flee in the Tahoe.

It is alleged that the two men then attempted to pull over and detain a female driver a short distance away on Route 111, but she drove away after the initial motorist approached the three and cautioned her about Calla and Toomey.

The two then continued down Route 111 int eh Tahoe before they were stopped by Suffolk County police officers in the Chick-fil-A parking lot on the Smithtown Bypass in Smithtown at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

Calla and Toomey were both charged with criminal impersonation and unlawful imprisonment. They are scheduled to be arraigned at a later date.
