DANBURY, Conn. -- Summer vacation is officially over as Danbury students head back to school Monday.

Superintendent Sal Pascarella welcomed students back to school in a letter to the community, and updated the district on new developments at Danbury schools this year.

This year Danbury High School welcomes the first cohort of 100 students taking part in the Early College Opportunity program. These students will earn their high school diplomas while simultaneously earning an associate degree from Naugatuck Valley Community College.

This year the high school will also launch a new initiative designed to improve school culture and reduce bullying. Dubbed “No One Eats Alone,” the initiative is designed to encourage students to include peers who are shy or isolated, as well as take a stand against social media bullying.

The city has approved a new $53 million expansion at the high school to add classrooms. Construction on the project is expected to begin in fall 2016 for completion the following school year.

The three middle schools are involved in projects designed to unify all their students. Students at all three schools are involved in a project of growing tower gardens as part of a collaborative project.

The district has also completed its kindergarten phase-in project. All elementary schools in Danbury now have full-time kindergarten.

The first day of school Monday will be a full day. Here are the school times:

  • 7:20 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Danbury High School
  • 7:40 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.: Middle Schools: Broadview, Rogers Park, West Side Middle School Academy
