DANBURY, Conn. – Ten music students at Western Connecticut State University and one alumna of the college recently qualified for a national singing competition.

  • Arianna Carlo, of Brookfield, first place in the Lower College Women’s category.
  • Benjamin McCormack, of Trumbull, second place in the Upper College Men’s category.
  • Matthew Feinberg, of Cheshire, second place in the Lower College Men’s category.
  • Nicole Salamon, of Greenwich, second place in the Lower College Women’s category.

  • Sophia Cannavo, of Winsted, and Kaitlyn Carruthers, of Fairfield, tied for third place in the Lower College Women’s division.
  • Daniel Satter, of Trumbull, third place in the Lower College Men’s division.
  • Karolina Wojteczko, of Derby, a WCSU 2010 alumna, placed third in the Graduate/Advanced Women division.

The 11 students will now have videos of their performances reviewed by a selection of judges, who will choose 14 singers nationwide in each category to participate in the national semifinals.

The semifinals and finals will be held this summer at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

“The National Association of Teachers of Singing is the largest professional organization for singing teachers in the United States,” Margaret Astrup, a WCSU music professor, said in a press release.

“For our students to occupy most of the winning places for the entire New England region is quite remarkable.”
