The STEM program will move out of Rogers Park Middle School for the 2014-15 school year and open at the city's new magnet middle school.

One program will focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, and the other will focus on global studies.

The Exploration Academies at Mill Ridge will offer students and parents an additional choice while still providing all students with the regular Danbury Public Schools middle school curriculum.

The site will contain two learning academies, which will draw students from throughout the city. Students in the district for either Broadview or Rogers Park can attend the magnet program.

Students will be selected to attend one of the schools through a lottery.

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy, which is currently at Rogers Park Middle School, will move to the Mill Ridge site.

The academy will focus on the integration of the technical areas reflected in the title. The aim is to make the academy more appropriate for students with an interest in the high-tech areas of science and mathematics.

The new Global Studies Academy will focus on an exploration of the world through themes that are international in nature. Mandarin Chinese will be offered at Global Studies Academy as well as Spanish, which will be offered at both academies.

Coursework will develop students’ problem solving, leadership, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Students will network with scientists, engineers, municipal leaders, government officials, and innovative leaders from both STEM and Global Studies fields.

To answer questions and to provide additional information, a community forum will be held Monday, Jan. 13, in the auditorium at Broadview Middle School at 7 p.m. In the event of bad weather, the forum will be held the following evening on Jan. 14.
