The plan, known as DHS2020, passed Tuesday with 54 percent of the voters casting a "yes" ballot and 46 percent voting no, according to Tweets from Mayor Mark Boughton.
"Onward for the Danbury Public Schools. #Danbury," Boughton said via Twitter @MayorMark.
Voter turnout was very low. At 6 p.m., Boughton said via Twitter that 1,405 people, or 4.1 percent of the city's voters, had cast ballots as of 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Research has shown that separating freshman from the rest of the student body highlights and improves the freshmen experience. The 110,000-square-foot academy would feature 24 classrooms exclusively for freshmen. It would be near the football field and baseball diamonds at the rear of the sprawling campus.
Here is the ballot question, which voters approved:
- Shall the $53,500,000 appropriation and bond authorization for planning, design, acquisition and construction of additions, renovations and improvements to Danbury High School be approved?
Danbury High School is already the largest in the state of Connecticut.
